"Everyone Isn't Smiling"
A Look At Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

(When It's Not There)
Leilani informed Bob that people want to be accepted for who they are. She explained that relating to others is also important. Feeling connected and that you are making a meaningful contribution is important. This makes an individual feel like they matter. They also feel cared for, and at work, an extended family can be built. Leilani explained to Bob that this is something Yoneily may have desired, relatedness.

Leilani's Three
Bob told Leilani that Yoneily seemed to be hesitant about speaking up in meetings and that he was guilty of not thinking she was qualified for the job.

Leilani was saddened that her new friend could be so closed minded, but knew that he was capable of changing for the better. She spoke to him about biases that he does not realize he has, and by treating Yoneily like she isn't welcome, it can make her question her competence, which will cause others to do the same. She expressed that Yoneily is intelligent or she would not be there. She told Bob it was not his place to judge her qualifications and he should do his best to create great work with her.

Bob mentioned the effort Yoneily put into bringing food and creating an international day at work. Even though she was up against adversity, she tried her best to create her own experiences and time to shine at work.

Bob was ashamed that he did not bother to participate and how he disregarded her country of origin until his personal trip.

Leilani explained that Yoneily's effort shows that she is determined to succeed and motivated. Her autonomous nature allowed her to voluntarily create positive experiences, even though it was not asked of her.
